“Silhouette” Writing Competition Favourites
Every few months, Jason Evans hosts a short fiction writing competition on his blog. He provides a picture as inspiration and all entries are limited to 250 words in any genre.
He also has some pretty groovy prizes, and whilst my entries are nowhere near the caliber of the winners- it gives me a fantastic opportunity to hone my skills and try and stay within the guidelines of the competition. The entries also get commented on by other entrants, and I always appreciate the feedback from writers with far more experience than myself. Mine was #113 this time round.
This competition had by far the most entries ever, and unlike previous competitions I didn’t get to read all of them before the reader’s choice voting closed. By the time I started there were over a hundred already, so I read every 5th one, and then started at the beginning again with the ones I’d missed inbetween.
I thought I’d list some of the ones I really liked in case anyone else wants to take a peek.
Entry Number 1 all’s fair in love and war
Entry Number 3 a murderous detective
Entry Number 6 black humour about an accidental death
Entry Number 5 a brilliant murder and music
Entry Number 11 a young eagle learning to hunt
Entry Number 20 just spooky
Entry Number 25 a creepy murder story
Entry Number 37 all’s fair in love and war
Entry Number 40 fallen down a hole
Entry Number 45 injured with a waiting vulture
Entry Number 60 a fighting couple
Entry Number 80 a neat little twist on guilt
Entry Number 85 murder most foul
Entry Number 95 very clever writing about writing
Entry Number 100 very visual, very descriptive
Entry Number 115 a chilling failed suicide
Entry Number 135 a drunk driver in purgatory
Entry Number 226 a poem
…come play on my rollercoaster…
