I Went To The Dentist Yesterday

Without Dormicum!

Okay, okay… it wasn’t that much of an achievement.

It was just to chat about the possibility of whitening my teeth, hopefully in time for my wedding. He did have a look at my teeth, and as soon as he started tipping the chair I started sweating and my heart started racing… but I stuck it out because I KNEW he’d be doing nothing more than look.

oh how I would love some of these...
oh how I would love some of these…

See, I smile a lot. I love to smile. People have told me a have a lovely smile. My Glugster loves my smile.

But I don’t like my teeth. Not even a little bit.

All my life my teeth have been small and yellow, and they’re getting darker as I get older. Yes I know- coffee, coke and cigarettes don’t help- but my teeth have never been white, not even before I started smoking. I have also been a grinder most of my life. My canine teeth don’t even have points on them anymore because I’ve ground them away. And when I smile and laugh, I tend to show just about ALL my teeth! I’m always conscious of the fact that they’re small and dark

:(

Its a vanity I know, but its how I feel.

A big part of the issue with whitening my teeth is how sensitive they are. I can’t even use a whitening toothpaste and my teeth hurt within a week… so much so that even breathing is painful! Any kind of bleaching process would simply worsen this, so thats not an option. I am pretty much limited to either veneers or crowns.

Make no mistake, neither one is a cheap process. And both will involve several trips to the dentist and a LOT of drilling!

As much as I would love to have beautiful white teeth… I dunno if I could stand the stress of so many dentist appointments- even with the Dormicum!

Update!

I got the quote from the dentist this morning- there’s very little price difference between crowns and veneers- and at R5K per TOOTH, this is SO not going to happen!

I am disappointed of course, but I’ll just have to suck it up and get over it.

Your issue with the dentist is just a mental thing that you must over come, I always enjoyed going to the dentist from a young age, I think you must have been scared off by people and not a bad experience? Dentists use injections to numb our mouths so there is no pain (okay I’ ve never had a filling or a root canal etc but I have had 4 normal teeth and 3 wisdom teeth removed and it was a piece of cake and orthodontics) anyways, I am trying to say what you will get out of it far outweighs any discomfort etc.

A lovely smile is the best asset a person can have, white even teeth make a dramatic difference to a person’s appearance. I’ve looked at your pics and also thought you should get some work done, its not a vanity, its a necessity and I strongly encourage you to have it done, veneers are awesome.

Hope to see some pics of you in the future sporting your brilliant new smile. You haveee to do it before you get married! You have such beautiful eyes and then when you have your new smile it’ll be a winning combination :)

lol I hope I havent offended you I’m encouraging you!

I would say do venners. Far less drilling I am sure. I have done crowns and I am sure veneers are the better way to go. I am also considering doing this. I will have to wait and see though…

if it’s something you really, really want….then you gotta deal with the drilling, i’m afraid.

i also have the same issue with whitening toothpaste – even breathing is unpleasant. only realised this recently – have switched back to regular toothpaste….

i’m still having to work up the courage to go and get my wisdoms out….

So true, a smile is a great asset to have. If it were me, I’d probably go for it, especially if you feel conscious about your coloring. BUT having said that I too am a wee bit afraid of a dentist, I cringe when I have to have a clean. Good luck !!

Oh girl, I understand your fear. I have huge teeth problems and was forced to crown two of my front teeth a few years ago – about 6 months before my wedding. Then I decided to veneer the other 4 of the 6 top front ones (they were a bit crooked too) – it changed my life. Cost a fortune, many hours of agony, but I am way way happier! Do it – if you have the bucks.

5k per tooth?? No discount on bulk?
Payment plans maybe?? At least offer up the knucklehead as a downpayment? Hahahahaaaa!
On a more serious note, don’t discount doing this for yourself. If its something you really really want I don’t think you can put a price on it. Plans can be made even if you maybe just start with one or two?
If you think of it in accounting terms each time you smile it will have cost you less and less.. and you smile all the time! So its practically for nothing!

MWAH!

Wow! That’s expensive per tooth.

Well done on making it through the appointment! I’ve never looked at your teeth before, I must admit. But maybe if it’s something you still want to do it might be worth shopping around for a better price?

It’s 5k per tooth but they’ll last forever so if you divide it up over the number of years you’ll have the lovely smile it’s cheap! Maybe just do the top row, like the 6 or so visible teeth when you smile…30k sounds crappy but it’s worth it, it’s like R1000 a year to have a good smile….just paying it all at once….think of the wedding pictures!!!

Can you not do the “zoom” whitening at the dentist, I paid for my mom to have it done and I dont recall her saying it made her teeth sensitive, I think the home bleaching moulds are much worse. (it’s about 3 grand)

My dad had his whitened and he was in pain for almost two weeks – he doesn’t have sensitive teeth normally. I’m sorry that you won’t be able to get the other option – that’s HELLA expensive. :/

I hate going to the dentist and that’s why I haven’t gone for years, but am working myself up to going this year. I also want to have my teeth whitened. How crazy is the veneers? R5k per tooth?! That’s insane!

oh my gosh that is ridiculously expensive!
My mom got the whitening mold made and all the gels and stuff but never used very long as it hurt too much so I can understand why that would not work for your extra sensitive teeth.
